Redirecting Kitty Thinking

Saturday, February 20th, 2016

2016-01-19-CB-rumbleIf a kitty on your counter is an issue for you, there are several solutions you could try to keep him or her on the floor.

1. Make the counter less appealing. Some folks use double-sided tape placed randomly on the counter. It will stick onto your kitty’s feet; he’ll be surprised and try to get it off. It is not harmful to the feet.

Of course, you wouldn’t want to keep the tape on the counter indefinitely, especially since it would be in your way when you’re trying to prepare meals or if you’re wanting to use the counter for other activities.

2. Redirect your kitty’s mood to jump. This has sometimes been done by “sound”. Put pennies or rocks or cans inside cans and shake the can when you see your kitty get into the jump up position. It will startle him and it is hoped make him decide it’s not so important to be on the counter after all. If you don’t have a can, you could clap your hands or even make PSST sounds. Anything noisy that catches your kitty’s attention.

The drawback with this method is that you’ll have to watch your kitty over a period of time in order to tell when he’s about to make his move to the counter. (more…)

Morris the Cat says S-L-E-E-P Like a Cat

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016

If you stopped by yesterday, you know all this week we are sharing Morris the Cat’s insight when it comes to sleeping like a cat He’s our guest blogger and is responding to the sleep deprived Dear Morris style.)

morris-last-hope-man-sleeping-sleepless-sanfran

Dear Morris,

I’ve been experiencing difficulties with falling asleep, tossing and turning once my head hits the pillow. I don’t get it because I feel tired all day at work; then I come home, brush my teeth, flip on the TV, and just… lie there. I’m hoping I can learn from the expert. Morris, what am I doing wrong?

Sincerely,
Sleepless in San Fur-nando

Dear Sleepless in San Fur-nando,

Your case, unfortunately, is not at all uncommon. When you’re going all day long at the speed of a cheetah, it’s no wonder your mind darts around like a red laser dot at bedtime. Luckily, as a cat, I spend up to 140 hours per week sleeping and I can tell you there is hope!

For starters, I notice you mentioned turning on the TV before bed. Cats don’t watch TV – this is partly because the majority of us can’t speak English that well, but mostly because it interferes with our snooze time.

Scientifically speaking, the ‘glow’ emitted by an electronic screen enters the brain and slows the release of melatonin, the hormone that helps us sleep. So next time you want to turn on the tube before bed, try counting sheep instead – or better yet, mice!

Kitty hugs,
Morris

Yours in enjoying insight from Morris,

and “The Boys”

P.S. There you have it! After getting a good night’s rest, tune back in tomorrow for the next edition of “Dear Morris”, and don’t forget to check out his Live Well & Prospurr website to enter the giveaway and learn how you can help Morris feed hungry kitties with just the click of a mouse.

P.P.S. Morris the Cat’s publicity reps contacted us about sharing Morris’s new promotion at his Live Well & Prospurr site and his “Sleep Like a Kitty” contest. As a result, they are sending to us a “Happy Kitty Kit” for “The Boys” and Hope.

The Cat Tree

Wednesday, January 27th, 2016

2016-01-19-CB-rumbleFor some time now, I’ve been thinking about getting a new cat tree for The Boys and Hope. In fact, I’d looked at them at PetCo and at Amazon.

I’d read the reviews and even tried lifting the trees at PetCo. (We retired two old lopsided trees years ago for lopsidedness and unstableness.)

Many of the online reviews discussed difficulty with putting together the cat tree; the directions were less than enlightening, some reviewers expressed dismay at having to take the tree apart and re-assemble it because the instructions that came with were almost non-existent.

Additionally, some reviews alleged that the assembled tree was not too stable on carpeting. While others mentioned trees that were less than desirable for large kitties. (I was especially concerned about my 15.2 pound Phillip being able to even get up onto it.) (more…)

Dakota-2016-01-10-48To some, I might have been up to no good – again – but to one very special furball, I may just have been what he was hoping for.

He: Tyler (came to me as “Domino”)
Birth Date: 9/1/2011
Entry Date: 6/12/2015
Forever Home date: 1/7/2016

I got him from the Humane Society of North Iowa, the in-town local animal shelter; he had been picked up as a stray last June. He must have belonged to someone at one time as the Shelter listed him as having been found wearing a collar.

As is the Shelter’s policy, he was held for seven days in hopes his owner would come to claim him. After that, he was put up for adoption. And so he waited, and waited. And waited almost seven months until I came along!

After I went to see him, though, I wasn’t sure I wanted to follow through with submitting an application. In person, he was (or appeared so) a pretty BIG kitty. Thankfully, not Phillip big!

“Hide ‘n Seek” Done Gone Wrong!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2016

2015-12-25 07.11.12Monday morning Phillip was upstairs with me as I was getting ready to go to Curves.

He then led the way down the steps, staying about three ahead of me.

Brody was at the foot of the stairs, behind the window curtain. While I didn’t see him, I think Phillip did as he ended up in a high-jump leap, skipping the last three steps to the bottom, then took off into the living room at a run. With Brody in “hot pursuit”.

The two of them then got into a major paws lock and proceeded to roll around on the floor. With me chasing after them in top voice.

Fortunately, when any of the kits get into disagreements, none will do the screechy cat thing. Instead they go for some pretty loud hissing and heavy breathing.

After a few rolls around, Phillip tried to get away from Brody, who was having none of that. He chased Phillip to the end-table in the living room with the lamp where Phillip planned to disappear behind the couch.

In doing so, Phillip knocked over the lamp, the bulb blew out, and the portable telephone thudded to the floor. (Thankfully, the glass lamp shade did not break!)

Brody disappeared to I know not where! Although the last I saw him at that time, he was giving the space behind the couch where Phillip went to ground a second glance!

Meowy Catsmas Gifts

Saturday, January 2nd, 2016

2015-12-25-28-christopher-toyIn case you missed this week’s issue of Mews Nooz, we’re sharing Christopher’s story about how much he liked the gifts from Morris the cat!

It all came about because Morris the Cat and Friskies launched a new website, Live Well & Prospurr, and a 9Lives promotion in November to help cats and humans. Morris was also “pawing it forward” by donating meals to cats at the ASPCA. We/the Kids were asked to participate. So we said “yes!”

As a result, Morris provided us with a blog post that we could post at our blog, Kittens n Things, and in an earlier Mews Nooz edition.

Further, in return, Morris and Friskies gave to us free stuff for our “Morris mention”. A huge box arrived for The Boys and Hope about mid-December; we saved it to open Christmas day. You should have seen the “kids”.

The box contained a 12-can case assortment of 5.5-oz 9Lives Cat food – pate! A box of 6 small kitty toys including three mice; in addition, a toy wand with a feather, and a yarn ball. I removed three mice toys so they could immediately play with them, and “someone kitty” removed the ball when I wasn’t looking!

We also received a pet groomer brush; it’s in the shape of a horseshoe. It fastens onto an oval carpet stand. You put catnip in a hole in the bottom of the stand to attract the kitties. When they walk through the brush arch, they are able to scratch their backs and it removes loose cat hair.

Christopher ^^^ immediately grabbed on to one of the mice (they have feather tails and are catnip-stuffed, too). As he played with it on the floor he got a crazy catnip stupor look on his face, as he stared off into space.

What a great Christmas! I had gotten them some toy mice, too; after seeing what was in the box, though, I decided to save those for later.

And then, of course, they had two new big (shipping) boxes they could play in.

Yours in lovin’ opening gifts,

, “The Boys”, and Hope

P.S. The Pet Groomer Arch brush is available at Amazon through this affiliate link.)

Photo of Christopher taken Christmas day; he’s a bit of a reddish gold color and somewhat blends into the carpet. It’s difficult to tell where the mouse is in his arms, but it’s there!

Happy New Year One and All!

We hope you have a terrific year!

2015-12-25 06.58.40

And don’t miss tomorrow’s issue of Mews Nooz.

I’ve got a tale about Christopher and Christmas. And see for yourself how much he loved one of his gifts!

We love that your are our furriends.

Yours in a Happy 2016,

, “The Boys” and Hope

P.S. The photo is of some of the goodies given to us by Morris the Cat and 9Lives because last month we shared Morris’s blog post about his new “9 Lives Live Well & Prospurr” promotion.

Christopher Joins 1st Gotcha Day Anniversary Pool

Saturday, December 26th, 2015

Since Phillip got his own special “shout out” in last week’s issue of our ezine, Mews Nooz, and here at Kittens n Things because Sunday, the 20th, was the anniversary of his 1st Gotcha Day, I can’t not mention that Christopher’s 1st Gotcha Day anniversary is today, the 26th”!

Christopher’s actual “gotcha” also involved a trip out-of-town; it was supposed to take about an hour-and-a-half (90 or so miles) but by the time I got there, it ended up it was close to 2.5 hours. I got lost and if it weren’t for the graciousness and directions of Denise, the foster lady pawrent, who had him, not to mention a fully charged cell phone, I might still be trying to find her country house.

I’m thrilled to say we made it through the year with the two of them (Phillip and Christopher) together. Although not entirely without fusses.

In my walk down memory lane, I was reading back through some comments I had written in the Days of Our Meows section of Mews Nooz last year when I first got Christopher. I was reminded I had changed his name at least three times before I settled upon Christopher. At that time I had also remarked, “Note: Our furmily is now complete. We have NO intentions of expanding our paw count!”

So I wonder how in the world I ended up with two more kitties on June 10th the following/the first part of this (2015) year!

Amy at the Shelter sent the above photo of Christopher to me last year, after I had seen his original photo on the Internet and had expressed interest in him. (I had asked if they had any other photos.) When she sent it, Amy remarked that he “had his paws crossed because he hoped I would take him and be his mom”!

We all know how that turned out!

Yours in celebrating Christopher,

and “The Boys” and Hope

Meowy Catsmas One and All!

Friday, December 25th, 2015

Although this photo >>> is not a photo of one of either “The Boys” or “the Gurrl”, we thought he pretty much shows how they might look on Christmas morning.

A little bit festive; a little bit grumpy, perhaps?

“The Boys” and the Gurrl and I hope you have a very Meowy Catsmas.

And thanks, too, for being our furriends as well as for all your purrs and warm thoughts over this past year.

Yours in celebrating the Holidays with your kitty furmily,

and “The Boys” and Hope
