Surprise Birthday “Purr-tay” today for Mister MO

Friday, February 19th, 2016

Today’s a special day for a very special furriend of kitties and their beans – that’s right, it’s MO.

He keeps the daily linkies up and running for us at The Cat Blogosphere as well as keeps us informed of kitty remembrances, special events and giveaways and contests around “cat nation”. A purrfect way we can stay in touch.

Now it’s his turn! We’re joining in with all the furriends and beans around the Internet to say Happy Special Day, MO.

Yours in thanking MO for all he does,

“Dear Morris” again

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016

Hey readers, I’m back with iconic 9Lives cat food spokescat Morris, giving advice to us lowly humans about how to sleep like a pro, and by that I mean, a cat. After all, they do sleep up to 140 hours a week – that’s 3.5 times your typical 9-5. If you’ve missed his other shades of advice you can catch his doodles here and here

To help on your quest to catch more Zzzs, Morris is also giving my readers the chance to win a super-cool, human-sized bed in the shape of Morris himself… because who doesn’t sleep better when snuggling up with a cat? Just go to his Live Well & Prospurr website to enter and to check out his video with more sleeping tips.

So here is the next Dear Morris installment …

morris-on-computer

Dear Morris,

I’m a cat but as you know, even animals have ‘spirit animals.’ Mine is an owl – a night owl to be exact. I love to play “catch the speck of dust” or “chase your tail in the middle of the bed” into the wee hours of the morning. My humans have no idea what they’re missing out on.

They just lay there snoring, and swat at me when I come too close. How can I make them see that daytime is lame, and the real party happens under stars (the stick-on, glow-in-the-dark kind)?

Yours truly,
Hyper Harry

“Sleep Like a Kitty” according to Morris the Cat

Monday, February 1st, 2016

morris-the-cat-sleepingKitties and Beans, we are fortunate to be able to “partner” with Morris the Cat and share his insight when it comes to sleep. Here’s what he’s got to say “Dear Morris” style, via several guest blog posts.

“There’s one thing in the world that there’s just too little of, and it’s not love. I’m talking about S-L-E-E-P.

So I had a thought… why not ask someone who’s truly an expert on the subject; someone who spends more time snoozing than most of us spend at work? I’m talking, of course, about Morris the Cat.

For those of you who don’t know him – or who’ve let sleep deprivation cloud your memory – Morris is the iconic spokescat for 9Lives cat food; he’s starred in over 50 commercials. When he’s not in front of the camera or chowing down on 9Lives, you can bet he’s napping in his trailer (ahem, carrying case).

Morris has taken time out of his busy schedule to answer some reader questions about the very im-purr-tant issue of sleep.

What’s more, he’s offering fans the chance to win a Morris-shaped, human-sized plush bed AND a year’s supply of 9Lives cat food.

Morris is guest posting today, and for the rest of the week. So be sure to stop by each day to get his insight when it comes to sleep.

Then go to his Live Well & Prospurr website to enter his contest and maybe get that bed!”

Yours in sleeping like a kitty,

, “The Boys” and Hope

P.S. Come back tomorrow to see what else Morris has on his mind.

Note: Morris the Cat’s publicity reps contacted us about sharing Morris’s new promotion for his Live Well & Prospurr site and his “Sleep Like a Kitty” contest. As a result, they are sending to us a “Happy Kitty Kit” for “The Boys” and Hope.

“New Year’s Resolutions” Out of the Mouths of Cats

Saturday, January 9th, 2016

resolution-cat-large Nothing says lovin’ from a kitty like yours telling you how you can best get your please on for her.

However, I saw an article Pet Place, written by their Staff, that comes pretty close in a cat telling it like it is in New Year’s Resolutions form.

I’m sharing three of the Resolutions here, and four in this week’s issue of Mews News. You can catch the entire article at Pet Place.

1. Stretch More! Call me overly critical, but your stretching routine is inadequate. Without proper stretching, you won’t be able to spring into action should a hunting opportunity present itself.

You can observe me if you need tips for how to successfully elongate your body or extend your paws into the air. Even if you aren’t the hunting type, better flexibility increases blood flow to muscles and reduces the risk of injury.

2. Try Something New. One time I doubted I could complete a long leap, then I tried it and surprised myself. Now I jump from the floor to the kitchen counter with relative ease all the time. …

3. Wake Up Early. Weekends are precious. When Saturday and Sunday roll around, you should wake up early and maximize your time. Make the most of your day…just make sure you feed me first.

But don’t worry – I won’t let you forget. In fact, I’ll probably help you wake up as the sun rises, ensuring you get a nice and early start to your days.

Yours in sharing New Year’s Resolutions,

,“The Boys”, and Hope

The above article, written by the Staff @ Pet Place was published there December 23, 2015. (They note that the article can be shared). Since it’s especially fitting for this time of year with so many of us making or considering New Year’s Resolutions, here are three of the Resolutions. Read the article in its entirety at Pet Place.

Cats And Their Claws

Saturday, September 12th, 2015

cat-scratching-carpet-floorIf you haven’t already, you’ll want to get a regular routine going so your kitty knows where she’s supposed to put her claws. You can even reward her when she scratches where you want her to scratch.

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for any “bad behavior” climbing and scratching where you don’t want her to be. And if she gets a bit too loose with her scratching and climbing, you may need to do some redirection by picking her up and taking her to where you want her to scratch. Be consistent with your redirection and make sure to praise her or to give her some treats for using the post like you want.

Some behaviorists suggest that you confine your cat while you’re waiting for her to “get with the program” where she’s doing your bidding by scratching where you want her to. Of course, the confinement would not be without play, food, water, litter box activities. And you’d be supervising the activity so you can gradually release your kitty from the confinement.

I have also come to realize that two of my kits are ground dwellers (Brody and Christopher) and two are tree dwellers (Hope and Phillip). Cat trees and cat perches are especially useful for cats that like to climb. The ground dwellers are more inclined to like the floor toys and scratchers.

Thankfully, so far, none of my four even looks at the draperies! Brody even finds it difficult to get up onto the couch; although he can jump up and I’ve seen him walk across the back of the couch. It just isn’t a common activity for him, thankfully.

Yours in directing your kitty’s claws,

and “The Boys and the Gurrl”

P.S. While we’re talking cat scratchers and where the claws ought to go, here’s a scratcher with catnip that might interest your kitty.

Cat Claws Go Here!

Saturday, September 12th, 2015

cat-scratching-carpet-floorWith the addition of my “new furmily”, all with claws, I have had to make some adjustments in how I interact with them. (My arms and legs, especially, are looking like road maps so I suppose I ought to consider more changes where the “kits” are concerned. Even the top of my head and my face have not been exempt from a claw scratch or two!)

While I do have numerous objects around the house they can use for their scratching activities, like the corrugated cardboard track toy (with a ball in the track), and the sisal rope scratcher, and another corrugated cardboard post, it seems the carpet and the sides of the living room couch are more of a draw for them.

Hope does like to reach out and stretch up to scratch the side of any cardboard box that happens to be in her sight.

So I’ve taken to just leaving a box or two around so she has easy access to them.

Of course, you can also purchase a cat tree as most of them have the carpet or rope as part of their design.

For your part, you can put the cat tree or other scratching device near where your kitty hangs out when sleeping so she’ll have easy access when she awakes.

More tips on how to guide your cat’s claws are here. Take a look. (more…)

Thursday, June 4th, 2015

Today’s one of the bestest days ever; it’s “Hug Your Kitty Day”.

Although if you’re like me, you don’t need a special day to give out the hugs.

GE DIGITAL CAMERANevertheless, it’s nice to have the special day.

And, Phillip < << and ^^^ Christopher are certainly basking in the love and giving out paw bumps and high fives! So let's hear it for Hug Your Kitty Day!

National Pet Day

Saturday, April 11th, 2015

If you caught this week’s Mews Nooz, you know I shared some tried and tested cleaning tips from Debra Johnson, home cleaning expert for Merry Maids for today’s National Pet Day. With these, Debra says, “all pet owners can celebrate the incredible animal companions in their lives, worry free!

And so here are three other tips that were not included in today’s issue of Mews Nooz:

Organize your pet supplies

• Designate a place near the door where you will keep items needed when walking your dog. This would include things like leashes, pick up bags and cloths to wipe wet or muddy paws before coming indoors.

• Store food in smaller, more manageable containers, and stash the larger bags elsewhere.

Keep food area tidy

• Place a mat underneath food and water bowls to catch any overflow as well as to keep bowls stationary when dog/cat is eating.

Don’t forget your pet’s bed!

• Keep your pet’s bedding clean and fresh, and you’ll help cut down on the amount of stray hairs elsewhere as well as keeping your pet healthy. Vacuum the bed often, even those that are washable.

Yours in celebrating National Pet Day,

and “The Boys”

Dressing Up Your Kitty at Halloween

Thursday, October 30th, 2014

grumpy-cat-halloween-smIf you’ve been in the area of Kittens n Things over the last week, you know I’ve been posting tips on how to share Halloween with your favorite furball.

This then is the last Halloween tip for this year.

Dress up. The current company of “The Boys” can thankfully say they have never been subjected to our whims of dressing up the kitty.

Jonny I, though, was not so fortunate. Although his dress up foray had nothing to do with Halloween. We got him a sweater, as after a haircut we thought he might need a little help keeping warm. That lasted about as long as it took us to put the garment on him.

Of course, many love to decorate their kitties at Halloween with costumes of various sorts. If you do, it’s a good idea to make sure the costume fits so he or she is not tripping over it, that it doesn’t slide off or something worse that could cause a hazard of sorts for your kitty.

Yours in all about Halloween with a kitty,

and “The Boys”

P.S. Here’s a neat Halloween dress-up idea for your kitty; what a snazzy, fun outfit.
