The Importance of the Annual Check-Up

Shots and spaying/neutering are not the only reasons to take your cat to the vet.

An annual “well cat” exam is a crucial part of your cat’s life. Although your cat may not need to be vaccinated every year, there are two very important reasons to take him to the vet on a regular basis.

Annual well-cat exams help to establish “normal” for your cat. If your vet has an ongoing record of your cat’s weight, for example, she will notice early changes that could spell trouble for your kitty.

By the time your cat is one year old, he’s 16 in human years!

After that, he ages at a rate of about four human years for every cat year. Major issues can develop quickly in a cat that grows and ages at this rate, which makes the yearly check-up even more important.

Some vets recommend that senior cats (those over 10 years of age) get twice-yearly exams.

The annual exam also gives you a chance to establish a relationship with your vet. If your cat gets sick or is seriously injured, you’ll be glad you know your vet well enough to trust her with your cat’s care in a crisis.

Your vet will be glad to know you and your cat well, too, so she can communicate with you as clearly as possible during a difficult time.

The War of the Wills

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Bowie, our baby cat child, has been a bit “under the weather” the last month or so. Actually, he has had “pulmonary disease” for quite some time…we just didn’t know to what extent; we were giving him Prednisone pills every-other-day and we now use a “rescue inhaler” on him (much like a people inhaler), at least twice a day.

Now, performing these tasks has become somewhat of an art…and one which we have yet to master! Van Gogh does not need to worry!

And our “makeshift doctoring” has become a “war of the wills”!

When we first began giving Bowie the pills he seemed to take them pretty much in stride. But I suppose after we boiwe_ezine_100208“chased him” around the house several times and shot a pill down his throat from the pill plunger, he got the idea that that wasn’t quite so much fun after all.

Actually, he’s not quite a fast as he used to be (perhaps because of his asthma) so he has been pretty easy to catch. Unless he heads under the bed; then it’s a whole other story.

Our biggest challenge, though, has been trying to figure out which pill it was that we found in his fur the other day! The Monday pill or the Wednesday pill?!

We don’t have quite the difficulty when it’s time for him to puff from the inhaler, though. We just squirt the medicine into the inhaler tube, then put the funnel–like mask over his nose and mouth.

And tell him to breathe… yeah, like he listens to us. But with me holding him and Chuck directing the inhaler, we’ve got a pretty good system worked out.

After Bowie’s had his whiff of medicinal air, we tell him to cough, he does, and then he gets a treat!

Yours in getting medicine into your kitten or cat,
