Redirecting Kitty Thinking

Saturday, February 20th, 2016

2016-01-19-CB-rumbleIf a kitty on your counter is an issue for you, there are several solutions you could try to keep him or her on the floor.

1. Make the counter less appealing. Some folks use double-sided tape placed randomly on the counter. It will stick onto your kitty’s feet; he’ll be surprised and try to get it off. It is not harmful to the feet.

Of course, you wouldn’t want to keep the tape on the counter indefinitely, especially since it would be in your way when you’re trying to prepare meals or if you’re wanting to use the counter for other activities.

2. Redirect your kitty’s mood to jump. This has sometimes been done by “sound”. Put pennies or rocks or cans inside cans and shake the can when you see your kitty get into the jump up position. It will startle him and it is hoped make him decide it’s not so important to be on the counter after all. If you don’t have a can, you could clap your hands or even make PSST sounds. Anything noisy that catches your kitty’s attention.

The drawback with this method is that you’ll have to watch your kitty over a period of time in order to tell when he’s about to make his move to the counter. (more…)

The Cat Tree

Wednesday, January 27th, 2016

2016-01-19-CB-rumbleFor some time now, I’ve been thinking about getting a new cat tree for The Boys and Hope. In fact, I’d looked at them at PetCo and at Amazon.

I’d read the reviews and even tried lifting the trees at PetCo. (We retired two old lopsided trees years ago for lopsidedness and unstableness.)

Many of the online reviews discussed difficulty with putting together the cat tree; the directions were less than enlightening, some reviewers expressed dismay at having to take the tree apart and re-assemble it because the instructions that came with were almost non-existent.

Additionally, some reviews alleged that the assembled tree was not too stable on carpeting. While others mentioned trees that were less than desirable for large kitties. (I was especially concerned about my 15.2 pound Phillip being able to even get up onto it.) (more…)

“New Year’s Resolutions” Out of the Mouths of Cats

Saturday, January 9th, 2016

resolution-cat-large Nothing says lovin’ from a kitty like yours telling you how you can best get your please on for her.

However, I saw an article Pet Place, written by their Staff, that comes pretty close in a cat telling it like it is in New Year’s Resolutions form.

I’m sharing three of the Resolutions here, and four in this week’s issue of Mews News. You can catch the entire article at Pet Place.

1. Stretch More! Call me overly critical, but your stretching routine is inadequate. Without proper stretching, you won’t be able to spring into action should a hunting opportunity present itself.

You can observe me if you need tips for how to successfully elongate your body or extend your paws into the air. Even if you aren’t the hunting type, better flexibility increases blood flow to muscles and reduces the risk of injury.

2. Try Something New. One time I doubted I could complete a long leap, then I tried it and surprised myself. Now I jump from the floor to the kitchen counter with relative ease all the time. …

3. Wake Up Early. Weekends are precious. When Saturday and Sunday roll around, you should wake up early and maximize your time. Make the most of your day…just make sure you feed me first.

But don’t worry – I won’t let you forget. In fact, I’ll probably help you wake up as the sun rises, ensuring you get a nice and early start to your days.

Yours in sharing New Year’s Resolutions,

,“The Boys”, and Hope

The above article, written by the Staff @ Pet Place was published there December 23, 2015. (They note that the article can be shared). Since it’s especially fitting for this time of year with so many of us making or considering New Year’s Resolutions, here are three of the Resolutions. Read the article in its entirety at Pet Place.

Cats And Their Claws

Saturday, September 12th, 2015

cat-scratching-carpet-floorIf you haven’t already, you’ll want to get a regular routine going so your kitty knows where she’s supposed to put her claws. You can even reward her when she scratches where you want her to scratch.

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for any “bad behavior” climbing and scratching where you don’t want her to be. And if she gets a bit too loose with her scratching and climbing, you may need to do some redirection by picking her up and taking her to where you want her to scratch. Be consistent with your redirection and make sure to praise her or to give her some treats for using the post like you want.

Some behaviorists suggest that you confine your cat while you’re waiting for her to “get with the program” where she’s doing your bidding by scratching where you want her to. Of course, the confinement would not be without play, food, water, litter box activities. And you’d be supervising the activity so you can gradually release your kitty from the confinement.

I have also come to realize that two of my kits are ground dwellers (Brody and Christopher) and two are tree dwellers (Hope and Phillip). Cat trees and cat perches are especially useful for cats that like to climb. The ground dwellers are more inclined to like the floor toys and scratchers.

Thankfully, so far, none of my four even looks at the draperies! Brody even finds it difficult to get up onto the couch; although he can jump up and I’ve seen him walk across the back of the couch. It just isn’t a common activity for him, thankfully.

P.S. While we’re talking cat scratchers and where the claws ought to go, here’s a scratcher with catnip that might interest your kitty.

Monday, March 2nd, 2015

The “NuBoys” are now getting in on all kinds of new stuff in the two months since they joined Billy and me. One new thing, in particular, is celebrating Dr. Suess Day.

Two Months

Friday, February 20th, 2015

GE DIGITAL CAMERAToday marks two months since Phillip joined our furmily.

Earlier this week, he and Christopher were engaging in some really serious “acting out” behavior.

Fortunately, no lives or limbs were lost, although Phillip did come up short some of his furs!

Often there are tufts of fur on the carpet in the living room or bedroom. Most likely an indication Phillip and Christopher were showing their mettle!

It also didn’t take long for Phillip to learn how to get me to do his bidding!

Yours in your kitties mellowing out,

and “The Boys”

P.S. To pass the long winter days, Phillip and Christopher both sometimes like to chase around the house with the SkitterCritter catnip mouse toy. Maybe you can pacify your kitty with one, too.

Cats deign to Design

Wednesday, January 7th, 2015

Right around Christmas, I received an email from Sneha at Terry’s Fabrics. She shared an infographic that she had made which looks at “What would happen if you let a cat design your home”.

While “The Boys” are least likely to do any fancy designs like these, we’re thinking they may like the opportunity to at least give it a try.

Dressing Up Your Kitty at Halloween

Thursday, October 30th, 2014

grumpy-cat-halloween-smIf you’ve been in the area of Kittens n Things over the last week, you know I’ve been posting tips on how to share Halloween with your favorite furball.

This then is the last Halloween tip for this year.

Dress up. The current company of “The Boys” can thankfully say they have never been subjected to our whims of dressing up the kitty.

Jonny I, though, was not so fortunate. Although his dress up foray had nothing to do with Halloween. We got him a sweater, as after a haircut we thought he might need a little help keeping warm. That lasted about as long as it took us to put the garment on him.

Of course, many love to decorate their kitties at Halloween with costumes of various sorts. If you do, it’s a good idea to make sure the costume fits so he or she is not tripping over it, that it doesn’t slide off or something worse that could cause a hazard of sorts for your kitty.

Yours in all about Halloween with a kitty,

and “The Boys”

P.S. Here’s a neat Halloween dress-up idea for your kitty; what a snazzy, fun outfit.

How to survive Halloween night with a kitty in tow

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

halloween-kittyToday’s thoughts on How to survive Halloween night with a kitty in tow come on the heels of two recent posts, Halloween Can Give You Such a Fright and Halloween Fright Night.

So take a look at this:

Kitty got the biteys? While Halloween can be a fun time for you and your kids, it may be a traumatic time for your otherwise docile kitty.

In fact, loud noises and lights and people dressed in strange garb that you can’t tell who they are (strangers, even) could cause your kitty to quickly get and to be out of sorts. Which, in turn, might lead to the claws and teeth coming out.

We’ve got still another tip for safely sharing Halloween with your kitty. Come back tomorrow and take a look.

Yours in Halloween fun with your kitty,

and “The Boys”

P.S. Your kitty may have fun dressing up for Halloween, especially if she can show off something like this Lion Mane Wig for Dog/Cat Halloween Dress up with Ears.
